MUTA.

After randomly opening a Spanish dictionary in search of a band-name, Muta (meaning pack of hounds) was born in 1999 and the Sydney five-piece began their first assault on the local live scene. After a line-up change in late 2000, Muta gigged solidly throughout 2001 and began to make a real name for themselves through their tight and energetic live performances and catchy punk-rock songs.

Becoming a favourite with a diverse bunch of punters, Muta have shared the stage with acts such as Softball (Japan), Frenzal Rhomb, Nitocris, The Meanies, Front End Loader, Blowhard, One Dollar Short, The Blood Idols, Klinger, and The Drugs as well as a host of other Sydney and interstate bands, and launched their debut EP 'Safe in the Shade of a Shadow of a Doubt' at Newtown RSL in 2001 when supporting US punkers 'The Ataris'.

Finishing off a successful 2001 in grand fashion, Muta took out the honours as national winner of the 'Jim Beam Rock Xposed' unsigned band competition in December 2001. Rocking their way past finalists from Victoria, Queensland, and the ACT, Muta came out on top at the Planet X Summer Games, and walked away with a Jim Beam Gibson Guitar, and a track on the next 'Planet X' compilation out later in the year through Shock Records.

In search of a recording that would capture the integrity of the band's live performance, Muta spent two days over Easter recording live at Sydney's Studio 301 with producer Peter Blyton behind the desk. The spoils of the sessions have been released on The EP 'Friends, lies, Alibis' out now.

From a review in Revolver Magazine, July 2001 by Michael Ljubic "Now Muta are punk. Actually they deserve the codes highest honour so I shall bestow them with the title of being "punk as fuck!" 'They were flawless. I mean you could close your eyes and with the sound they were creating, easily picture yourself in Orange County USA watching any one of their local big name acts, all but for one thing - Vocalist Grant Kaplan. When the words come spilling out of his mouth there is no fake arse "yo dude" accent, it's true blue all the way".

Muta departed our beloved scene in 2003 with a kickarse farewell performance. We salute you boys!
